Bill Murphy - Crystal Lake Central (1985-1997) / Prairie Ridge (1997-2004)

Bill Murphy was a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association for 19 years, from 1985-2004. During those 19 years, Bill was the athletic director at Crystal Lake Central High School for 12 years and at Prairie Ridge High School for seven years. Bill also spent several decades coaching. He began his coaching career as assistant football coach in 1969 and continues to work the sidelines today. He spent 15 years as an assistant and head wrestling coach and nearly 20 years as a track and field assistant coach and head coach. Bill’s dedication and leadership had, and continues to have, a tremendous influence on hundreds of student-athletes.
Bill served the IADA in a number of different roles. He was the conference chairman in 1997-1998. He was the assistant and door prize chairman for two years. He spent two years as the assistant and exhibit chairman. He was the business manager for five years and a district chairman for two years. Because of Bill’s commitment to the IADA, he was named the IADA Class AA Outstanding Athletic Director of the Year in 1995-1996 and again in 1996-1997.
Doug Smith, retired athletic director, stated that “Whether at Central or Prairie Ridge, his programs were always competitive. Most importantly, they were run with class and integrity; he expected nothing less. This was instilled in his athletes and coaches; it was a program to be modeled in many different ways.”
Bill Murphy’s commitment to the athletic programs at Crystal Lake Central and at Prairie Ridge and his numerous contributions to the IADA helped pave the way for his selection as a member of the Illinois Athletic Director Association Hall of Fame.
