Bob Cowan - Granite City
|
Among his peers, “Bob Cowan served as a great resource to many other administrators across the state. He was always willing to take the time necessary to help anyone anyway possible. He was the type of person that people felt like they could talk to and get a direct answer from, or if he did not know the answer, he would find it out for you.” Bob worked countless hours to meet the needs of the students and staff at Granite City High School. He also worked very hard in promoting the IADA in Southern Illinois and was a person that would do whatever was needed to help promote athletics. Jerry McKechan, principal at Granite City High School, stated that “Bob was every principal’s dream. He never added to the principal’s workload, but was always there to reduce it. Bob never came with problems without bringing acceptable, well thought out alternatives. In addition, his leadership qualities made him a role model for our high school staff. Everyone looked to him for guidance.” Bob Cowan was a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association for 16 years, from 1994-2009. Prior to becoming an athletic administrator at Granite City, Bob served as a varsity baseball coach and varsity football coach. While directing the athletic programs at Granite City High School, Bob made time to serve the IADA in many different roles. Bob served as the IADA conference assistant co-chair and conference co-chair. He also served as the exhibitor chairman, corporate sponsor chairman, assistant hospitality chairman and local liaison. Bob also served as the IADA historian for ten years and was a member of the IADA executive board for 11 years. Because of his commitment and service to the IADA, Bob was named as the IADA Division 7 Class AA Outstanding Athletic Director of the Year in 2006. Bob Cowan’s service to the IADA and commitment to the student-athletes and coaches at Granite City High School ensured his selection as a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. |
