Kent Ayers - Pekin Community High School
|
“What can I do to help?” were Kent Ayers’ first words at host schools during a career of service and coaching that began in 1968 as a boys tennis coach. Kent’s dedication has been described as second-to-none, and his 17 years as Pekin Community High School’s athletic director as well as his contributions to IADA and the IHSA have earned Kent’s place in the 2010 IADA Hall of Fame. A past IADA Outstanding Athletic Director of the Year, Kent was viewed as a dedicated, hard working, and conscientious athletic director who prioritized the needs of Pekin’s student-athletes. For example, in his service as athletic director he fostered the growth and level of the girls athletic programs at Pekin High, and as a “hands on” athletic director his service extended to well beyond the school day and to sometimes sweeping water off golf greens or tennis courts. A colleague said Kent has never refused a request for help from Pekin Community High School—even in retirement, he honored a request to serve as interim athletic director during a time of unexpected need at Pekin. Under Kent’s directorship, the Pekin Insurance Holiday Basketball Tournament was recognized as a premier Illinois tournament. His dedication to excellence as tournament director ensured a seamlessly and professionally run event providing first-class treatment for everyone involved. Another colleague said Kent’s preparation for hosting activities was always excellent and his outstanding administrative skills were obvious to all. With that same talent and ethic he has made contributions to the IADA through his service as a representative, liaison and committee chair with further contributions to the IHSA as a GBB Happening coordinator and state softball financial manager. Regardless of state, conference or school setting, Kent remained a trusted and honest voice for his colleagues. Each of Kent’s countless contributions to Illinois athletics was executed professionally and productively, and in recognition of such service, Kent Ayers is welcomed to the 2010 Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. |
