Norbert Kassing - New Athens High School

For nearly a quarter of a century, Norb Kassing served as athletic director at New Athens High School. Norb is known as an individual that fostered a healthy spirit of competition among athletes and school spirit among all students. A colleague stated Norb was a careful and thoughtful planner as an athletic director. Norb’s former superintendent noted that whenever he organized an event, administrators could be confident that attention has been paid to every detail. During his tenure at New Athens, Mr. Kassing implemented girls athletics. While athletic director, Norb spent years as head coach for the junior high’s baseball, boys basketball, and girls basketball programs.
He is known as a leader among his conference colleagues. Norb helped the Cahokia Conference expand their membership twice and helped develop guidelines for their conference expansion. He served his athletic conference as president for three years. Norb has been an active member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association for 24 years. He served as Division 7 Liaison for seven years, president, golf chair, retired athletic director liaison, and assistant cor­porate chair. On two occasions, the IADA recognized Norb as an Outstanding Athletic Direc­tor of the Year. Norb’s contributions extended to the Illinois High School Association by serving on the IHSA Sportsmanship Committee from its onset until the time of his retirement. The association honored Mr. Kassing by presenting him with the IHSA Achievement Award for Sportsman­ship. New Athens has hosted many regional and sectional tournaments under Mr. Kassing’s leadership. 
Reflecting on his career, Norb values the friendships he has developed with fellow athletic directors throughout the state. He values the everyday interactions with student-athletes and coaches. Norb’s professional commitment to student-athletes and their programs has placed him in an elite group – the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.
