Gary Woods - Normal Community Wesy High School

Gary Woods’ whole career was spent in Normal. He worked at both the junior highs and high schools finishing his career opening up the new Normal West High School. Gary served as athletic director while at each building.
At the high school level he coached football, tennis, track, basketball, and baseball. He taught business before assuming his athletic director duties full time. He started teaching in 1968 and retired from Normal West in 2001.
Several honors have been bestowed upon Gary: Bloomington-Normal Intercity High School Honoree (1996), Big 12 Outstanding Contributor (2001), State Board Those Who Excel (2001), and IHSA Outstanding Contribution (1998), just to name a few.
His service to the IADA has been that of a Liaison, Executive Board Member, District Representative as well as writing several articles for the IADA journal. He has served the IHSA in the capacity of state boys golf manager, Sportsmanship Committee member, has hosted numerous state level tournaments, and served on the Media Advisory Committee. At the local level he started a coaching intern program along with an increased number of coaches along with salary increases. He added girls sports, and reestablished the elementary sports program through the YMCA.
Marty Hickman, IHSA Executive Director, states, “Gary was the type of athletic director the IHSA could count on to host activities.You always knew the events he hosted would be better than anyone expected.” The Illinois Athletic Directors Association is proud to have Gary Woods as a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.
