Phil Svetich - Argo High School

Phil served as athletic director at Argo High School for twenty-five years. To date this is the longest term of service for an athletic director in the SICA Conference. He also had the longest term of service at Argo  High School - 41 years. Phil has been married 46  years to his wife Betty. They have four children and  seven grandchildren.
He served the IADA as district representative for three years. He is currently co-chair of the retired athletic directors. He received an Outstanding Athletic Directors of the Year Award in 2000. He has managed numerous tournaments for the IHSA during his tenure.
He has held basically every position in the SICA Conference: secretary, president, and historian and served on their Board of Control. Locally he is very involved. Phil has been a McCook Park Administrator for 36 years and worked for their Little League for 22 years. He co-chaired the McCook 75th Anniversary.
While at Argo he coached football, baseball, and was head boys track coach prior to becoming athletic director. Under Phil’s direction the gymnasiums were renovated, the baseball, football, soccer, and softball fields were developed, and a new 8 lane track was put in.
Frank Stout, Principal writes, “As athletic director he encouraged all his athletes to give one-hundred percent all the time and win with grace and dignity and lose with dignity. His attention to detail has made the coach’s job easier.”
The Illinois Athletic Directors Association is proud to have Phil Svetich as a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.
